About
Aileen Williamson – Championing Sustainable Housekeeping in Hospitality From room to reef: Why Hospitality Must Rethink Its Relationship with the Planet By Aileen Williamson For over a decade, I lived what many would call “the dream”—working as a PADI scuba diving instructor along the breathtaking coastlines of Egypt and Thailand. I spent my days underwater, guiding divers through vibrant coral gardens, swimming alongside turtles and reef sharks, and witnessing marine life that many people only see in documentaries. But even as I lived that dream, I watched it slip away—piece by piece, reef by reef. As new hotels sprang up along the Red Sea coast, so too did the signs of ecological collapse. 💀 First came the construction runoff—dust and debris clouding the waters and suffocating coral. 💩 Then the raw sewage and With over 20 years of hands-on experience in the international hospitality sector, Aileen Williamson has built a career rooted in operational excellence, team development, and practical sustainability. She has worked across multiple levels of hotel operations—gaining a deep, lived understanding of the daily challenges faced by housekeeping teams, frontline staff, and management. Her experience makes her a trusted voice in reshaping how housekeeping is perceived, supported, and empowered across the industry. Today, Aileen is the founder of AC-Eco, a hospitality consultancy specialising in auditing, training, and sustainability leadership—with a particular focus on housekeeping and back-of-house operations. Her work supports hotels in reducing their carbon footprint, improving operational practices, and engaging teams at every level with meaningful sustainability strategies. She is a certified trainer for Carbon Literacy for Hospitality, and regularly delivers tailored workshops to General Managers, Heads of Department, and frontline teams. In parallel, she works closely with properties pursuing Green Key certification, helping hotels meet rigorous environmental criteria while improving guest satisfaction and team wellbeing. Her approach is practical, tailored, and deeply collaborative. What drives Aileen is creating real change on the ground. She believes that sustainability should be accessible, actionable, and empowering—not just a tick-box exercise. Her consultancy work bridges the gap between sustainability theory and hotel reality, embedding responsible practices into SOPs, procurement, team training, and daily operations. From September, Aileen will be based in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, offering regional support to hotels across the Middle East. Her services will include on-site training, auditing, and strategic guidance, helping properties align with global sustainability goals while maintaining high standards of housekeeping and guest care. Aileen’s Key Contributions to the Housekeeping Industry: 1. Advocacy for Housekeeping Staff Aileen has been a strong and consistent advocate for housekeepers, speaking openly about the need for better working conditions, greater recognition, and fairer treatment. She actively works to elevate the status of housekeeping as a professional, respected career path. 2. Training and Education She has created and delivered comprehensive training programmes tailored specifically for housekeeping teams, covering topics such as sustainable cleaning, safe chemical use, waste reduction, and guest experience. Her training helps teams feel confident, capable, and proud of their contribution. 3. Consulting and Innovation Through AC-Eco, Aileen helps hotels optimise their housekeeping operations using smart, sustainable strategies. This includes evaluating workflows, introducing innovative tools and low-impact technologies, and aligning operations with brand values and guest expectations. 4. Sustainability Initiatives Aileen’s work consistently champions eco-friendly housekeeping—from introducing biotech cleaning systems to reducing single-use plastics and streamlining laundry procedures. Her sustainability-first approach benefits the environment, protects team health, and enhances guest trust. 5. Rebranding Housekeeping She is committed to changing the narrative around housekeeping—from an undervalued back-of-house function to a central pillar of hotel success. Her work reframes housekeeping as a role that demands skill, leadership, and innovation, opening doors for career progression and pride in the profession. 6. Public Speaking and Knowledge Sharing Aileen shares her insights through speaking engagements, articles, workshops, and courses, contributing to the professional development of housekeeping leaders and sustainability champions across the industry. Her voice is both credible and refreshingly real, grounded in operational experience. Aileen Williamson’s work exemplifies the belief that operational excellence and sustainability go hand in hand—and that no hotel can achieve lasting impact without valuing the people who keep it running day after day.
